"Please, don't take him." She sobbed, staring at the man who stood nearby. His features were composed into a mask of guilty obedience, his eyes turned away from her as he couldn't bear to look at her. At one time she had been the center of his entire world. Just for a little while, he had put her ahead of another man that the two of them had loved but she should have known that it wouldn't be long before his loyalties turned again.
"He's all I have, my love. All I have ever wanted." She looked down at the child in her arms who slept on, peacefully unaware of the fate unfolding all around him.
"I know." Her lover moved in front of her now. The one man who had stolen her heart away but could give her nothing else. "I know but we have to do this. We have to, we owe him."
"No." She wanted to scream at him but the sleeping babe would keep her from doing so. Still, there was no hiding the way her voice started to break with a new set of tears that were threatening to come on. "He would never ask this of us." She swallowed thickly. "Even after what we did to him, he wouldn't. He would never ask me to give up this child."
"No, he wouldn't but the Fates do. We did a great wrong, Guinevere. We must atone for it, we must do this so that Camelot has another chance."
"Lancelot." She tightened her arms around her son, watching the tiny boy squirm as he started to sense the tension between his parents. "Losing him, it will kill me. I've waited forever for him to come and now you want to take him away. I won't survive it, I won't."
As the baby finally started to cry, she turned from the would be comforting arms of her lover as she used the child's cries to mask her own sobs. Soon the child would be gone and she would have no reason to live.
----
When Gwenyth came awake, the tears still ran down her cheeks but there were no sounds coming from her. She had gotten good at not crying out in the dark. It was the only way to keep the others, and Arthur, from knowing he wasn't the only one to have dreams of another time and place. If she told him, he would know his were real and she wasn't sure she could have that.
Because if he was that man of great legends, then her dreams were real too which was something she couldn't embrace. Because if he was the hero of the story, then she was the very first villain.
